Several of MOOCs´ (Massive Open Online Courses) objectives are: to make sure that learning in a traditional classroom setting transcends physical space, and, at the same time, to innovate in high-quality education. This trend in virtual education, in which the Universidad de los Andes is involved, aims to increase the number of global opportunities for learning.

The main attraction of these courses is the flexibility they offer as people can take them at a convenient time and from any location: the courses are online so people do not have to be in a classroom.

Additionally, MOOCs are offered by high-quality education establishments, and the people who take them are offered the possibility of receiving a certificate for a small fee. The Universidad de los Andes and other global higher education institutes such as Stanford, MIT, Harvard, and Berkeley offer MOOCs.

The Universidad de los Andes offers 22 MOOCs that explore subjects such as psychology, education, finance, marketing, physics, literature, entrepreneurship, and video games development. These courses are held on the world´s three largest MOOC platforms: Coursera, edX, and FutureLearn.

All the MOOCs are designed and taught on these platforms by teachers at the university. Although all the courses are free and available for hundreds of thousands of people, there is also the possibility of receiving a certificate for a fee. It is important to highlight that the payment is not made to the university but to the platform that hosts the MOOCs. It is necessary to fulfil the platform´s requirements to be awarded the certificate of completion.
