MIT and Uniandes to carry out joint research

Los Andes signed an agreement with the prestigious institute that, until now, has only had an agreement with the Technólogico de Monterrey and the Universidad Católica in Chile.

The Universidad de los Andes and MIT have just signed an agreement to jointly develop research projects in different areas. To begin, this project will be valid for two years.

The research alliance -that MIT only has in Latin America with the TEC de Monterrey and the Universidad Católica in Chile- has established a seed fund of US$ 125,000 per annum to cover the cost of travel for teachers and doctoral students from both universities.

"The two institutions will form a committee to revise research proposals. The first meeting to work on the presentation of the proposals will take place this month", affirmed the dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Alfonso Redoyes Alvara, who worked on the MIT – Uniandes agreement.

Although the relationship with MIT dates back several years, it mainly consisted of high-level academic training of teachers and students from Los Andes in the institute´s postgraduate schools. This new alliance will narrow the relationship as both universities will jointly develop projects.

The main criterion MIT uses to choose its academic allies throughout different parts of the world is the scientific impact that working together with peers would have, as well as their positions in the rankings.

In Latin America, the Universidad de los Andes is in both QS and Times Higher Education´s top ten rankings. The university recently received four out of a possible five stars from the British firm QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) as part of the QS stars quality-measurement system.
